Newborn Session
What To Wear Guide
baby is here! I know that Picking out outfits can feel like an overwhelming task.
I know, I know there are so many options and you aren’t sure exactly what to wear. I have put together this guide to help you choose your outfits and feel amazing. Ultimately, I want you guys to feel like yourselves. The goal is for the whole family to feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. There are some outfits that look great in real life but don’t photograph well. I want the focus of the images to be on you guys and your faces, and I don’t want your clothes to be distracting from that.
ABOVE ALL, YOUR PERSONALITY MATTERS MOST.
I want you to feel and look like yourself when you look back that these photos. I know that your body probably feels a bit foreign to you right now. It has just been through a lot. Give yourself some grace when you’re choosing your outfit.
What to expect during your session
Try to feed baby before I arrive. During your session I will be doing photos of the whole family, just the baby by themselves, and then photos with mom and dad separately. If baby gets upset, it’s not a problem at all. This is part of newborn life. Feel free to feed baby whenever they need it.
Movement
You want to be able to move in your clothes. If you feel constrained in your clothes, you won’t feel comfortable in front of the camera. Black leggings with a sweater or flowy top always look great in newborn photos. Those maternity jeans you were just wearing? Those are perfect too. Flowy tops, sweaters, button downs are always great for newborn photos.
Colors
I recommend choosing clothes that have neutral colors. Neutrals don’t mean just grays and browns, there are neutrals of every color (mustard yellow, forest green, navy blue, burnt orange, etc.). Try and stay away from fluorescent distracting colors. Red, pinks, and bright oranges can sometimes cause a weird hue on your skin tone. We’re not going for a whole 90s-kid-everyone-matching-in-the-picture vibe either. I promise you will all start to blend together if everyone is wearing a white polo and black pants.
Patterns
Patterns are okay if they are small and subtle. Big patterns will distract from your faces. Flannels are always a yes. If you do have something that has a big pattern, I would suggest throwing a jean jacket over it to tone it down.
Your home
I usually take newborn photos in your home. You just had a baby, please don’t spend hours trying to make your house look perfect. Part of taking newborn photos is capturing this season of life and that probably means that there will be some mess around. The mess means you live there and I love the mess. Typically I take photos in your living room, nursery, and your bedroom. When I am looking at rooms, I am looking for light. If you have a room with a lot of natural light, I will take you there. I also love taking a couple photos outside too.
Baby
I will do photos of baby by themselves during our shoot. I love when baby is just in a plain onsie. If you have a couple swaddles, have those ready too. We will do a couple outfit changes with baby.
Dad clothes
Dad clothes can be jeans and a plain, neutral colored t shirt. Dad can wear a button down and shorts. Just make sure that he is not wearing the exact same color as you are. If you do, then you will start to blend together and that doesn’t look great in photos.
